Extinction of aversive eliciting functions as an analog of exposure to conditioned fear: Does it alter avoidance responding?

Abstract
Two experiments using equivalence class formation and aversive conditioning procedures evaluated whether respondent extinction (conditioned fear) reduces trained or derived avoidance behavior. After respondent extinction in one context, few participants stopped avoiding in another context; indicating that extinction alone does not guarantee the elimination of derived avoidance without contextual controls.
